Docker, Microsoft unveil easier way to deploy Azure Containers

Microsoft and Docker have announced an extended “strategic collaboration” to integrate Docker Desktop more closely with Microsoft Azure and Visual Studio Code. Simply put, the built-in tools and features of Docker Desktop will help developers run Azure containers in the cloud with a few simple commands. This should streamline the move from desktop to cloud and could save developers days of coding and recoding.

With this new Docker-Microsoft extended partnership, developers can easily create Azure Container Instances without orchestration.

Developer teams can share their persistent collaborative cloud development environments through Docker Hub, allowing them to do remote pair programming and real-time collaborative troubleshooting.

UK agrees to cloud deal with Google for public sector discounts

The U.K. government has signed an agreement with Google that will grant public sector bodies a discount on the tech giant’s cloud services.

The deal will allow public sector organizations like government departments, local councils and National Health Service (NHS) bodies to obtain a discount based on what their estimated spending on Google’s cloud platform would be for the next two years.

The deal with Google is part of the government’s push toward a multi-cloud program where it doesn’t just rely on one supplier. Google didn’t disclose how much of a discount public sector institutions would get on its cloud services.

AWS Ground Station Connects the Amazon Cloud to Space Satellites

Amazon Web Services has a thriving relationship with the commercial space industry, making it the go-to cloud provider for nearly all new space startups. Its most recent service, AWS Ground Station (GS), provides a unique communications channel between satellites and AWS data centers.

AWS Ground Station connects satellite dishes directly to its cloud services and adds the ability to send commands to and download large amounts of data directly from satellites. The service has been in operation for about a year, and provides a distinctive edge over Google, Microsoft Azure and other cloud providers.

“A lot of space customers were processing their data on AWS before AWS Ground Station,” said Hawthorne. “AWS Ground Station gets rid of the speed bumps by connecting satellites directly to AWS. Now, they can manage all their space operations natively in one place on AWS and only pay for the ground station antenna time they use.”

Kubernetes Clusters Vulnerable to Man-in-the-Middle Attacks

Kubernetes clusters configured to use certain container networking implementations (CNIs) are susceptible to man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks, the Kubernetes Product Security Committee has warned. The vulnerability affects clusters running a “default Kubernetes security context”: i.e. workloads running with CAP_NET_RAW privileges.

The vulnerability has a “medium” CVSS score of 6.0, but probably shouldn’t be ignored, considering what can be done with it.

The Kubernetes Product Security Committee suggests the following mitigations: “Setting the host default to reject router advertisements should prevent attacks from succeeding…”

This “may break legitimate traffic, depending upon the networking implementation and the network where the cluster is running. To change this setting, set the sysctlnet.ipv6.conf.all.accept_ra to 0.”

It also suggests using TLS with proper certificate validation and disallowing CAP_NET_RAW for untrusted workloads or users.
